ANDROID HOW-TO
How to read web pages aloud on Android
You can listen to an article with features already on your phone or use a web reader app. The best fit depends on your browser, the page, and whether you want to keep a listening history.
Use “Listen to this page” in Chrome
- Open an article in Chrome on Android.
- Open the three-dot menu.
- Tap Listen to this page if it appears.
Chrome can play, pause, change speed, and select a voice. Google notes that playback is not available on every website; if the menu option is missing, that page is not available for playback. Google also requires “Make searches and browsing better” to be enabled for Standard playback. Read Google’s Chrome instructions.
Can’t find “Listen to this page” in Chrome?
Google says the feature is not available on every website. Try another article or Android Reading mode. You can also share the link to WebReader to try reading that page; results still depend on how the website provides its content.
Use Android Reading mode
Reading mode can simplify supported long articles and read them aloud. Install it from Google Play, enable its Accessibility shortcut, then open a supported article and tap the shortcut and play button. Google says Reading mode does not support PDFs, email, chat messages, or social media feeds; if audio does not work, update Speech Services by Google. See Google’s Reading mode instructions and Speech Services on Google Play.
Use WebReader to share a link and keep listening
- In your browser, tap Share on an article.
- Choose WebReader, or copy and paste the link in the app.
- Start playback. You can switch apps and use the notification controls; history and saved progress are available on supported pages.
WebReader loads pages over the internet and uses text-to-speech voices available on Android. Extraction varies by website; pages that require sign-in, block access, or load content in an unusual way may not work completely.
Try with this guide itself. On an Android phone with WebReader installed, copy the article link and paste it into the app.
Open WebReader, paste the link, and start playback.

Which option should you try?
- For quick playback in Chrome, use Listen to this page when it is available.
- For a simplified reading view, try Android Reading mode on supported pages.
- To share a link into an app, revisit listening history, and continue in the background, try WebReader.
No option is guaranteed to work with every website.
